Eileen Tabios

(Come Knocking)

I said, I love the flag

You let a stray street sound
intrude
But as I turned away
I felt you raise your hand
before it sadly lapsed

 …admired encaustic
for protecting
the fragility of paper

…arms grew wiry tugging at rope
That evening, welts rose—
soothed them with
the wet walls of a beer bottle

What is the surface of reality?

With what are we grappling
when we are dreaming?

How difficult it must be for you—
still, I must come knocking…
