AILEEN IBARDALOZA

Tea in the Sahara

Dear Aunt Therese who does not pour tea
nevertheless disconcerts—

            Her cup full of sand,
she follows the Caravan Trail of Dates,
            where, at a watering stop,
women with many colored wraps invite her to tea.

They steep the leaves and pour her a glass.
She tastes sweetness thrice infused with mint.
She offers them her cheek to kiss,

she sips again, then dips her scone.

Dear Aunt Therese, in twenty years, has not poured tea.
She pretends not to care, even as the other
guests pretend she isn't there.
