Henry Weinfield

Fragment of an Injunction to the Poets of the Future

There is no God: You must begin from that

Presupposition of all modern thought

(Whether or not it recognizes it);

Then you can see what else there is to say.

You must abandon all mythologies,

And in the end accept reality’s

Inexorable hold on you, its sway.

No god will hasten you upon the way:

There is no god to guide you or convey –

Nor, for that matter, any land of truth

(Such as you may have conjured in your youth)

To which to be conveyed: Forget the myth,

The heroic journey to the Underworld.

The Underworld to which you have been hurled

Is this world – here you are and here it is.

You must abandon all mythologies. . . .
